A burger just wouldn’t be a burger without a pickle but what’s the thinking behind these little green devils (or angels depending on how you feel about them), who’s the brain surgeon responsible and what exactly are they?

Common thinking is that pickles were used to create a balanced meal by providing something that was acidic to cut through the fat taste of the burger pattie. Mmm, there’s got to be a line about burgers and balanced meals there somewhere but I just can’t see where! Apparently they were originally served as a garnish on a plate and as the takeaway revolution gathered pace they were inserted in the bun to ensure we retained that balanced meal.

Yes, OK, OK, but what are they? Animal, vegetable or mineral? Definitely animal they are usually made from small under developed cucumbers that are pickled in either brine or vinegar that is flavoured with dill and other herbs and spices and that’s why you can still taste them on your burger after you’ve dumped them. well I wonder what pickle will come with myIndian Takeaway that I have just ordered.
